Whether you live in Brandon, or any other part of Manitoba, when most people think about car insurance, they think about damage to their car. The truth is, vehicle insurance covers much more than just your car.
Given the sheer amount of cars on the road and the distractions drivers deal with every day, the chances of being involved in a car accident are plentiful.
You’re at risk every single time you get into your car.
It’s important to understand what your coverage options are — not just for your car, but for you, and people who may be injured as a result of your negligence.
Having adequate Car Insurance limits is serious business
If you were ever involved in an accident and found to be at fault for someone else’s bodily injuries, you could literally lose everything if you’re not properly insured.
What a lot of people don’t realize is, that having great coverage doesn’t necessarily mean having higher insurance premiums.
Because Guild Insurance Group is 100% independent, we can take your current coverages and compare them with a wide range of insurance providers to see who offers you the best deal possible.
The best part? It doesn’t cost you a penny more to use us. We are compensated by Manitoba Public Insurance directly, and work on your behalf to properly cover your needs and exposures, and make sure that there are no hidden gaps in your policy.
No two MPI insurance contracts are the same, and while two policies side-by-side might look the same, the limits and coverage types can vary drastically from policy to policy.
This means you need someone who truly understands policy contracts, like us, to sort through the exclusions and conditions for you, so you can rest easy knowing that you have the best possible coverage at the best price without having to learn legal jargon.
Common Autopac Rating Variables
Type Of Car
The type of car, engine size, safety features, etc.. are all part of determining the rate. Repair costs, protection features, and vehicle characteristics.
Your driving record and loss history plays a substantial role in the price. If you have a spotty driving history, or multiple moving violations or accidents, chances are, you won’t get a preferred rate until those things are at least 3 years old.
Do you drive your vehicle to work daily? Do you rely on public transportation? Does your vehicle remain unused during certain seasons? The type of vehicle use can have a significant impact on your annual insurance premium.
Here is some additional information on each type of use to help you choose the one that best suits your lifestyle and ensure your insurance policy accurately reflects your needs.
What Is All-Purpose Use?
This category is exactly what it sounds like – there are no restrictions on how you can use your vehicle. This type of vehicle use is typically selected by individuals who regularly use their vehicle for commuting to work, school, or business purposes.
What is Pleasure Use?
This type of vehicle use restricts the amount of driving you can do for work purposes to no more than four times a month or 1,609 kilometers during a policy term.
The vehicle cannot be used for business purposes, but you are allowed to drive dependents to school. This type of use is not applicable to individuals who drive themselves to school.
This category of vehicle use is typically selected by individuals who are retired, stay-at-home parents, on maternity leave, or who use other forms of transportation for work or school.
Common Carrier Use?
This type of vehicle use is intended for vehicles used by couriers or common carriers, who are conducting deliveries as part of a business.
The majority of individuals who choose this category are engaged in delivery-related activities for their business.
Where You Live
Your location and place of residency also play a role in determining your insurance premium. Manitoba is divided into four territories, with all territories except for Winnipeg having a lower rate due to a lower population density, fewer accidents, and a higher incidence of vandalism and theft.
If you commute from outside the city limits of Winnipeg, as designated by the Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), you will be subject to the commuter rate. However, if your vehicle is located within Winnipeg’s territorial risk area, you will pay the same rate as other residents in the Winnipeg territory.
Merits vs Demerits
Having a positive driving record can significantly impact the cost of your insurance. If you have earned merits on your driving record, you can expect to receive discounts on both your driver’s license and insurance premiums.
The greater the number of merits, the higher the discount. For instance, if you have achieved the maximum of 16 merits, you are eligible for a discount of up to 37%. However, if you have demerits, it will not result in any discount on your insurance premium.
Important Car Insurance Coverages
When you browse through your policy, you may see certain coverages and wonder exactly what they are, and why they’re on your policy.
Optional Auto Insurance Extension Coverages
Although your basic Autopac auto insurance coverage protects you and your vehicle we highly recommend that you consider increasing some of the optional extension coverages listed below:
Increase your third-party liability limit: This coverage option provides protection in the event you are held liable for damages or injury to a third party. By increasing your liability limit, you can ensure that you are adequately covered in the event of an accident.
You can choose to increase your limit to $1 million, $2 million, $5 million, $7 million, or $10 million, depending on your personal preference and the level of coverage you need.
Deductibles are a common feature in the insurance industry and play a crucial role in controlling the cost of insurance for customers. They do so by limiting overall claim costs for insurance providers.
As a policyholder, your deductible is the portion of the cost of your Autopac claim that you are responsible for paying. The insurance provider is responsible for covering any costs above your deductible, up to the limit set in your policy. In other words, you pay your deductible, and the insurance provider covers the remaining costs.
It’s important to note that if the damage to your vehicle is less than your deductible, you do not need to file a claim. In such a scenario, the cost of repairs is covered by you, and you do not need to utilize your insurance coverage.
As of April 1, 2021, all drivers in Manitoba who purchase Basic Autopac for private passenger vehicles will automatically receive a $750 deductible.
This means that in the event of a claim, drivers will be responsible for paying the first $750 towards the cost of repairs, with the remaining cost covered by MPI, up to the policy limit.
By decreasing your deductible, you can reduce your out-of-pocket expenses in the event of a loss. You have the option to choose a deductible of $500, $300, $200 standard, or $200 plus.
Increased Maximum Insured Value (MIV)
If you have a vehicle valued over $70,000, you can increase your Maximum Insured Value (MIV) to ensure that you are fully covered in the event of a total loss. To do this, you can purchase the Excess Value Coverage option.
Auto Loss Of Use Coverage
This coverage option provides a daily allowance towards alternate transportation in the event that your vehicle is damaged and cannot be used. This coverage helps to cover the cost of rental cars or other transportation methods while your vehicle is being repaired.
New/Leased Car Protection
If you have recently purchased or leased a new vehicle, it is important to protect your investment. This coverage option provides protection in the event that your vehicle is damaged or stolen.
If you are storing your vehicle for an extended period of time, it is important to ensure that it is adequately protected. This coverage option provides protection in the event of theft or damage while your vehicle is in storage.
Purchase Insurance For Rental Cars
If you plan to rent a car in Canada or the U.S.A., it is important to ensure that you are adequately covered. This coverage option provides protection in the event of an accident or damage to the rental car.
Purchase Insurance For Your ORV
If you own a snowmobile or off-road vehicle, it is important to ensure that it is adequately protected. This coverage option provides protection in the event of an accident, theft, or damage to your snowmobile or off-road vehicle.
